Calico Beans

Calico beans served with a slice of nutty bread and a piece of cheese

This has been in the Fearheiley family for at least a few generations. The last time I had it was at Uncle Mike’s, though he got it from his Aunt Pauline. It makes a hearty bean stew that could serve as an entire entree or a side dish.

1/2 pound chopped bacon
1 pound ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup catsup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon mustard
2 teaspoons vinegar
1 16-ounce can of pork and beans
1 large can of butter beans
1 can of kidney beans

Cook the bacon and pour off the grease. Cook the beef and onion and pour off the grease. Put everything together in a crock pot and cook for about 3 hours.
