Jessie Allen Herren (my maternal great grandmother)
She died long before I was born, but I wish I could have known her in life. She’s hiding in the background of a photo of my aunts, uncles, and cousins, taken sometime in the 1930s. I asked why she appeared to have bug eyes, and got the answer, “Oh, that was her Amelia Earhart costume.”

Ah, a weirdo after my own heart! Before this moment, I honestly wondered how I could be related to so many normal people. Long before this photo was taken, she moved to Illinois from Virginia in a covered wagon sometime in the 1800s. She settled in Fillmore, and she and her husband Frank Herren built Fillmore’s biggest prairie-style house in 1913.
